Swiss glaciers have suffered an extraordinary 5.5% loss of ice in 2026, driven by low winter snow and intense summer heatwaves. The rapid melting is raising concerns about future water supplies, hydropower, agriculture and mountain safety across Switzerland and the wider Alpine region.
