Ukraine Warns: Delays in Defense Aid Only Encourage Russia to Prolong the War

In a clear and urgent message, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has warned that any delay or suspension in defense aid from its allies, particularly the United States, risks emboldening Russia to prolong the war and continue its brutal aggression. This statement comes as reports circulate about Washington temporarily halting arms shipments to Kyiv, sparking serious concerns in Ukrainian leadership.

Pentagon Pauses Key Military Shipments to Ukraine

On Tuesday, Politico reported that the Pentagon has halted deliveries of anti-aircraft missiles and precision munitions to Ukraine, citing fears over America’s shrinking weapons stockpile. These weapons are crucial for Ukraine’s air defense and the overall effort to repel Russian attacks.

In response, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned John Ginkel, the U
arianna Betsa, was held at the request of Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, underscoring the critical importance of uninterrupted military assistance.

Ukraine Calls for Stability in Defense Cooperation

During the high-level discussion, Betsa expressed Kyiv’s deep appreciation for the United States’ unwavering support since the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022. However, she stressed the urgent need to maintain and expedite previously committed defense packages, especially those focused on bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses against relentless Russian missile and drone attacks.

“The Ukrainian side stressed that any delay or slowdown in supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities would only encourage the aggressor to continue war and terror, instead of seeking peace,” the Foreign Ministry said in an official statement.

Kyiv emphasized that while it supports diplomatic solutions and shares Washington’s stance on the urgent need to end the bloodshed, defense assistance and increased pressure on Russia remain absolutely vital to achieving those goals.

Uncertainty Around Suspension of Arms Deliveries

Despite the alarming news reports, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense clarified that it has not yet received any official communication regarding the suspension or revision of US military aid. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has already requested a phone call with its American counterparts to seek clarification on the issue and to reinforce the need for “stability, continuity, and predictability” in the flow of defense supplies.

At the heart of the concern is Ukraine’s air defense systems, which are considered critical to protecting Ukrainian civilians and key infrastructure as Russian airstrikes intensify.

Zelensky Calls for Continued U.S. Commitment

In his evening address to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Kyiv and Washington are actively clarifying the details of the reported arms delivery pause “at the working level.”

“One way or another, we must ensure protection for our people,” said Zelensky, adding that continued US military support for Ukraine is not just essential for Ukrainian security, but also in the “common interest” of both nations.

A Crucial Crossroads for Ukraine and Global Security

The current situation highlights the fragile security environment in Eastern Europe and the importance of sustained international solidarity. While peace efforts remain on the diplomatic table, Ukraine’s defense needs are growing more urgent by the day as Russian aggression escalates.

Kyiv’s message to Washington and the global community is clear: any hesitation in defense aid risks prolonging the conflict and increasing the suffering of millions of Ukrainian citizens.
