President Milei’s Party Secures Major Victory in Argentina’s Parliamentary Elections

Javier Milei’s La Libertad Avanza wins Argentina’s 2025 parliamentary elections, claiming 40.8% of the vote and reshaping the country’s political landscape. The result strengthens Milei’s reformist agenda and signals a shift toward liberal economic policies.

La Libertad Avanza Surges Ahead

President Javier Milei’s ruling party has claimed a decisive victory in Argentina’s parliamentary elections, securing 40.8% of the vote with 96% of ballots counted.
The results confirm a resurgent mandate for Milei’s La Libertad Avanza (LLA), which defeated the Peronist Fuerza Patria opposition — trailing behind with 24.5%.

The libertarian party achieved key wins in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, and Mendoza, marking a strong national performance across Argentina’s political map.

A Referendum on Milei’s Leadership

Nearly half of the Chamber of Deputies (127 out of 257) and one-third of the Senate (24 out of 72) were up for renewal.
The elections were seen as a referendum on Milei’s government, testing public support for his radical economic reforms and anti-establishment agenda.

With the victory, La Libertad Avanza secured 64 new seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
Starting December 10, Milei’s bloc will hold 94 out of 257 legislators, consolidating its position as the largest force in Congress—though still short of an outright majority.

This new balance will allow Milei to sustain presidential vetoes and block impeachment attempts, ensuring political stability for his next reform phase.

Milei Celebrates a “Historic Day”

Addressing supporters from his campaign headquarters, President Milei hailed the results as a turning point for Argentina.

“Today has been a historic day,” he said. “The Argentine people have left behind decadence and chosen progress. Today begins the construction of a great Argentina.”

He promised to advance a comprehensive reform package through Congress, describing the next phase as “the most reformist Congress in Argentine history.”

Milei emphasized his determination to continue liberal economic reforms, reduce state intervention, and “consolidate Argentina’s growth and takeoff.”

Low Turnout and Opposition Control in Senate

Despite the victory, the election recorded historic low turnout — only 68% of eligible voters cast ballots, the lowest participation rate since Argentina’s return to democracy in 1983.

While Milei’s party gained significant ground in the lower house, the Senate will remain under opposition control, potentially complicating his legislative path.

Global Reactions and Trump’s Endorsement

The win drew attention from abroad. Former U.S. President Donald Trump, an outspoken supporter of Milei, congratulated him on Truth Social, writing:

“He is doing a wonderful job! Our confidence in him was justified by the people of Argentina.”

Trump had previously endorsed Milei but warned that U.S. aid could be cut if the opposition prevailed — a comment that added a sharp international edge to the domestic contest.

Argentina’s Political Landscape Shifts

Milei’s triumph cements his position as one of Latin America’s most disruptive leaders, steering Argentina toward a libertarian and free-market future.
With a stronger base in Congress, Milei now faces the challenge of transforming electoral momentum into lasting economic recovery and institutional reform.
