A shocking case has emerged in Pennsylvania after authorities discovered more than 100 human skulls and other remains in a man’s basement, prompting widespread outrage and disbelief. The scene has been described as a “horror movie come to life” by local officials.
Jonathan Gerlach, 34, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses including grave desecration, theft, and abuse of a corpse. The investigation revealed that the remains were stolen from Mount Moriah Cemetery, one of Pennsylvania’s historic burial grounds containing around 150,000 graves.
A Grisly Discovery
Law enforcement officials found long bones, mummified feet, decomposing torsos, and over 100 skulls stored in Gerlach’s basement and a nearby storage unit. Some of the remains are believed to be centuries old, while others belonged to infants who had died only months earlier.
Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse described the scene:
“Detectives walked into a horror movie come to life. Very simply, we have recovered an awful lot of bones, and we are still trying to piece together who they are, where they are from, and how many we are looking at.”
Arrest and Confession
Gerlach was apprehended at Mount Moriah Cemetery on January 6, carrying a crowbar and a bag containing two small children’s remains, three skulls, and other bones. According to court documents, he admitted to stealing around 30 sets of human remains.
Authorities are still investigating Gerlach’s motives, though reports indicate he was involved in an online Facebook group known as the “Human Bones and Skull Selling Group”, where members shared and displayed human remains.

Charges and Investigation
Gerlach now faces over 500 criminal charges, including theft, receiving stolen property, and abuse of a corpse. Police are working to identify the victims, with some remains possibly belonging to infants or very young children.
“I grieve for those affected by this,” Rouse said. “Many are trying to determine if the remains are of their loved ones. It is a deeply disturbing situation for families and the community.”
The investigation into Mount Moriah Cemetery break-ins had been ongoing for months, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Community Impact
The discovery has shaken Pennsylvania and raised concerns about cemetery security, grave desecration, and the illicit trade in human remains. Experts say this case is one of the most disturbing in recent U.S. history due to the sheer number of remains involved and the variety of ages.
