President Nicolas Maduro claims Venezuelan security forces thwarted a “false flag” plot to bomb the US embassy in Caracas, blaming a local terrorist group for trying to inflame tensions with Washington.

Maduro Blames ‘Terrorist Group’ for Failed Embassy Attack
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced that authorities had foiled a bomb plot targeting the US embassy in Caracas, calling it a “false flag operation” designed to escalate tensions with Washington.
During his weekly television address on Monday, Maduro said intelligence sources uncovered an alleged plan by a local terrorist group to plant explosives at the US mission. “Two sources agreed that the intent was to provoke conflict and create chaos between Venezuela and the United States,” he said.
Jorge Rodriguez, head of Venezuela’s dialogue delegation, also confirmed that Caracas had alerted Washington to what he described as “a serious threat from extremists who attempted to plant lethal explosives at the US embassy.”
Rodriguez added that security measures around the embassy had been reinforced and that authorities were monitoring “potential external links” to the alleged group.
Tense Diplomatic Landscape
Maduro emphasized that, despite years of political hostility, Venezuelan forces are protecting the US embassy and maintaining order.
“Even with all our differences with the US government, we guarantee the security of diplomatic missions,” Maduro said.
Diplomatic relations between the two nations were formally severed in 2019, and the embassy has since been largely vacant except for a limited number of local administrative staff.
Accusations Over Drug Trafficking
Maduro also accused Washington of weaponising its anti-drug campaign as a pretext for aggression against Venezuela.
“The imperialists want to turn drug trafficking into an excuse for military provocation,” he warned.
The United States has increasingly targeted Venezuela in its counter-narcotics operations, though most illicit drugs entering US territory are sourced from or pass through Mexico.
US President Donald Trump recently ordered naval and air patrols in the Caribbean, claiming the missions were part of efforts to intercept drug shipments. Washington confirmed airstrikes on vessels off the Venezuelan coast, which it said were carrying narcotics bound for the US — operations that have reportedly resulted in at least 21 deaths.
“We’re stopping drugs at a level that nobody’s ever seen,” Trump told US sailors in Virginia on Sunday, reaffirming his administration’s tough stance toward Venezuela.
The alleged embassy bomb plot adds yet another layer of tension to already fraught US–Venezuela relations, deepening fears of a renewed confrontation between the two nations.
